Germanium is an elemental metal in high demand across multiple mission-critical technologies such as fiber optic cables, semiconductors, optics, automotives, solar panels, and space solar cells. China produces 60% of the world’s germanium, putting the US and its allies at significant supply chain risk. With the current geopolitical dynamic and export controls, germanium has become expensive and difficult to access, jeopardizing our national security and increasing adversarial power over our capabilities.
